Charlottesville Weekly ran a story about something we fought for during the General Assembly session. It’s a timely reminder of why we do what we do- both legislatively and electorally.
In the 2012 budget, Gov. McDonnell eliminated funding for wage investigators. He showed how quickly essential protections can be wiped clean with a stroke of a pen.
Paying workers when they work is a matter of basic fairness.
That’s why we mobilized to restore and strengthen Virginia’s wage laws. The bill passed the Senate unanimously before dying in a house committee. Despite that, we helped add a budget amendment restoring funding for six wage investigators.
There’s more work to do to ensure all Virginia workers have basic protections on the job including being paid for their labor and having safe and fair workplaces.
This election provides a chance to elect candidates who care about the well-being of working people.
